|Halacha - Abriged Amidah|
|Submitted by anonymous Answered by Rav Peretz Moncharsh|
|Answer: The source of the Chaye Adam is the gemara Berachos 28 and it is brought in Shulchan Aruch OC 110:1 and commonly referred to as "Tefilas Havineinu". However the Mishna Berura there in Biur Halacha and the Aruch HaShulcha write that it is not done just because one cannot concentrate on a full Shmona Esrei, because today people have difficulty concentrating even for an abridged version. Additionally, the Shulchan haTahor writes that it should not be said because Abaye in the Gemera there curses anyone who says an abridged tefilla. Furthermore, the Kaf HaChaim writes that since there are various nusachaos mentioned in the Poskim and we are uncertain which is correct, the minhag is to always only say the full version.

Answering Kaddish and Kedusha would certainly NOT be considered sufficiently extenuating circumstances to permit shortening Shmona Esrei. In fact the Mishna Berura in 104 s.k. 3 implies that only danger to one's life is adequate justification.

There are quite a few situations in SA & MA in 109 where the length of the 18 can make a difference especially in MB seifim 4-7, i.e. choices of aniyos and smicha geuka ltefial etc. What is considered a shas hadchak? Zman tefila as opposed to Chtzos? Can one say a short Chazara?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Shortening the middle berachos is less problematic then Havineinu and, as you mentioned, is brought in SA 104:1. However it would not be a solution for the latecomer in siman 109, because there we are trying to shorten the initial parts of davening so he can START Shmona Erei with the minyan while here he has already started saying Shmona Esrei and fulfills tefilla b'tzibur even if he finishes long after the minyan.

Kvod Harav Moncharsh Shlita Selicha I was not referring to "Tefilas Havineinu". But to the 12 shortened middle Berachos further in Seif 31 See also in Seifim 1,2 of klal 25and SA Siman 104 where there is mention of such a concept as shortening Berachos mentioned. There is no problem of changing Matbeah Habrohos as explained by the Baal Hatanya in his SA 68:1 & 114:8. It is interesting that this is not an opton mentioned by poskim in the various scenarios of “late comer” dealt with in SA siman 109
